A short history of development

The Community Education Coalition was formed in 1997 to support the Columbus, Indiana, region in its education, economic, and workforce development initiatives.

Mission

The CEC's mission is to bring community leadership and resources together to improve the community learning system from birth to age 99 and beyond. Our work is done in the spirit of collaboration, focusing on how best to serve the learner.

The extended community to be reached

The goal is to create a seamless learning system from "birth to 99 and beyond"; focusing on a 10 county area in Southern Indiana.

Planning partners include

Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Economic Development Board, City of Columbus, Indiana University Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC), Ivy Tech State College, Purdue School of Technology, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, ArvinMeritor, Cummins Inc., Irwin Financial Corporation, Columbus Regional Hospital, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Johnson Ventures, Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County, and many more companies and community partners.

Present program includes

Center for Teaching and Learning; Columbus Quality Improvement Center; Careers in Indiana; Columbus Learning Center project; new bachelor degree programs in business, nursing, education, and psychology at IUPUC and a new MBA program; a bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems Technology at Purdue School of Technology; associate degree programs in early childhood, surgical technology, and radiological technology at Ivy Tech State College; transfer of credit agreements among Ivy Tech State College, IUPUC, and Purdue School of Technology so that students in the appropriate associate degree program can transfer to IUPUC or Purdue School of Technology in a seamless manner; supporting the Connected Community Partnership as teachers receive training in the use of technology as a part of their effort to connect to their students and parents of students at home; supporting the cooperative agreement between the C4 dental assisting program and Ivy Tech so that students can receive Ivy Tech credit while enrolled in high school courses (and receiving American Dental Association accreditation... a first of its kind program in the country!)
