Purdue University is a major research university founded in 1869 to further the study of agriculture and engineering. Its 1,579-acre campus is located in West Lafayette, a large town 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis on the banks of the Wabash River. Purdue University has regional campuses in four other cities, two of which are jointly administered with Indiana University, and in 11 locations throughout the state where the School of Technology’s statewide delivery program is offered. Purdue is on a semester system.

Purdue University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in over 200 different programs in its 12 academic schools. The list of recommended high school courses for admission is a range: For general admission, the minimum is necessary; for selected programs (agriculture, science engineering, health sciences, management), the upper levels of math and science are needed.

Distance learning plays a significant role in Purdue University’s Instructional mission. Last year, 9,505 learners participated in 132 West Lafayette-based distance learning programs, in which learners are separated from instructors by place or time or both. These include credit and noncredit courses delivered by two-way videoconferencing, videotape, the Internet, and correspondence. Learners include college students, engineers, school administrators, pest control and healthcare workers, and other. In accordance with Purdue’s March 2000 Strategic Plan for Distance Learning, distance learning programs are administered by Continuing Education in cooperation with the academic units. Continuing Education also assists faculty in conceptualizing, developing, delivering, and administering distance learning activities. Programs to enhance faculty use of distance learning strategies are offered by Continuing Education and the Multimedia Instructional Development Center.

Application Deadlines

We begin reviewing applications and making offers of admission in September. March 1 is Purdue’s preferential application deadline. You may apply after that date, but admission will be based on space availability and academic quality. For spring or summer admission, you should apply at least 30 days before the start of the term.

Withdrawals and Refunds

A student who wishes to withdraw from the University during any semester or summer session shall begin the withdrawal process by securing a withdrawal form at the Office of the Dean of Students, Room 207 Schleman Hall of Student Services. When a student withdraws from the university, the registrar will issue authorization for refunds in accordance with the existing policy regarding such refunds.

If you have a strong college preparatory program, have achieved at a high level, and have strong test results, you can establish advanced college credit through several methods.

Students who take courses that are taught by high school teachers during the regular school day for concurrent high school and college credit may be asked to validate the credit through the College Board AP or Purdue Advanced Credit Examinations, as determined by the subject department.
