Through the Senior Scholars Program, Ivy Tech State College is waiving tuition for eligible seniors, for a savings of nearly $200 per three-credit course.

To qualify, you must be:

  • an Indiana resident
  • at least 60 years of age
  • a high school graduate or GED recipient

The Senior Scholars initiative covers Ivy Tech’s full array of credit programs—more than 2,000 courses in six academic divisions. Courses can also be taken from Community College of Indiana campuses as well as via distance education.

High school students get head start
The Indiana College Network (ICN), in collaboration with Indiana colleges and universities, offers many opportunities for high school students to get a head start on college credit or preparation for college. In 2003 alone, there were more than 175 high school courses offered, with delivery methods such as the Internet, videotape, and print/correspondence.

Both advance placement courses and standard high school courses are available. Everything from Art History to Human/Molecular Genetics and AP English to Personal Finance is available to high school students.

There are also a variety of programs available to help high school students acquire college credit or prepare for the college experience, such as the Ivy Tech State College 2+2+2 Initiative and the USI College Achievement Program.

Distance learning services for students with disabilities
If you have a disability that makes attending oncampus classes difficult, distance education offers you new opportunities to pursue your educational goals.

The member colleges and universities of the Indiana College Network (ICN) are committed to providing equal opportunities for students with disabilities. If you participate in ICN distance education courses, you will be provided with the same level and type of services that would be provided to a student in a campus-based offering. However, the manner in which these services are provided may differ to accommodate your needs.

Learning center staff provides strong student support
When Steve Royer decided to go back to college and complete his associate degree from Ball State University, he found the support he needed from Susie Trees at the Learning Network of Clinton County (LNCC). A Purdue University Extension Office, the LNCC is one of nearly 80 ICN Learning Centers located throughout Indiana.

Initially, Royer went to the LNCC to take a noncredit Internet class offered by the extension office. An ICN poster caught his eye, and he asked Trees what it would take to go back to school and complete the associate degree he had begun nearly 30 years ago. With Trees’ support and encouragement, Royer not only completed his associate degree, but now plans to enter a bachelor’s program this fall.

IU offers online certificate in distance education
An online program offered by the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies can help you learn how to use technology to enhance the learning of your students, employees, or customers. The Certificate in Distance Education Program was created for people in business and industry, elementary and secondary education, higher education, health care, and government. The program's modules include readings, multimedia support materials, and individual projects that apply distance education concepts to real-world situations. You'll also have plenty of opportunities to interact with your course instructor and other program participants via the Internet.

The eight-week program will be offered June 2-July 28, and September 15-November 9.

You can enroll two ways:

The certificate program. The fee covers the cost of all modules and instructional materials. The cost is $525 per person or $475 each for two or more individuals from the same organization.

Graduate credit. The fee to enroll for 2 hours of graduate credit in adult education is $373.30 for Indiana residents and $1,077.20 for nonresidents. The cost for the certificate program and instructional materials is an additional $150. Students will be billed separately for tuition.

Correspondence courses still popular choice
Of the more than 1,900 courses available at a distance this fall, 25 percent are traditional, print-based, correspondence courses. While some of these courses must be completed within six months, others may allow the learner one year to complete the course. Students are advised to register directly with the institution from which they would like to take the independent study course. Institutions offering correspondence courses include Indiana State University, Indiana University, Purdue University, Taylor University, and Vincennes University.
